Putting The Fear Of God Into THEM
Not long ago, someone said to me, "You better be careful what you say there in your new book, else THEY will hang you for it."
I spluttered my drink and laughed.
"They??? Which they?? What can THEY possibly do to me?!" I exclaimed.
"Take away my lucrative teaching position? I don't have one!
Cut my research grants? I don't get any!
Not publish me in the "New Scientist" anymore? I never was and never will be!
Excommunicate me? Hell, I've never been communicated, never mind incommunicated!"
The person in question nodded as I spoke but then came back with, "But THEY will get you anyway - SOMEHOW!"
Ok, so now let's back up here.
WHO are these THEY that "will get me somehow"?
With my first responses, clearly I must have thought that THEY were the scientific community. One in a million and beyond their own little incestuous village, no power at all. None. Anyone who declares that village to be cancerous and moves out can be sure to find no further problems anywhere else in the big, wide world.
So if it isn't those THEMS, who might the THEY in this case be?
The police?
Well, if I pay my taxes, get my copyright attributions down honestly and correctly, don't make any bizarre claims to raise the dead that I can't prove in actuality and drive within the speed limit, these THEY will leave me well alone and even give me a pat on the back for being a good citizen.
So it can't be The Law or The Police that "will get me".
Who else?
The "establishment"?
Who exactly, are THEY when THEY are at home?
I guess it depends on where you are, what rat infested village you're living in, as to who "that ruling class" may be.
If you are in broadcasting, and you want to get your programmes on the BBC, then it clearly doesn't serve to slag off the chairman in public or totally contravene THEIR mission statements and current regulations, guidelines, fields of interest and settled opinions, whatever they may be.
However, if you want your programmes to go out on a Pirate Radio station which serves the Nation of Islam, other regulations apply altogether - in every way.
Not that I ever particularly wanted to have my materials broadcast THERE or by THEM, it's just a random example, really.
Here's what I saw, here's what I thought.
THEY are - everywhere and nowhere, but more specifically, THEY are specific to where they are and how they operate. THEY have clubs, and those clubs are never THE ENTIRE WORLD, although to some farmer, whose only club the local Farmer's Club is, it may SEEM like the end of THE world should they be excommunicated.
That's much like it was when there was A society in Victorian World. That "A" or rather, "THE" society were only consistent of a few dozen people - but they had everyone else trying to run rings about them.
Those THEY had given themselves:
- The right to perpetuate the total illusion (or lie) that if you were one of THEM, you had *everything* a human being could ever aspire to or want in a lifetime, including love, money, morals and a line to God almightly;
- The copyright on fashion and good behaviour, to set it and to say what it was;
- Hordes of people looking up to THEM for that copyright and trying to mimick them, trying to DELUDE THEMSELVES that they were "really just like THEM" when they clearly weren't and could never be;
- Many people trying to "get in" when there was no hope in hell nor any hell that they could ever belong, such as bankers, industrialists, bastards, madams, ethnics etc, and all of those were kept on a collar-and-lead by the THEM of the day, making them jump through hoops endlessly and holding out a "societal acceptance" IF ONLY THEY (gave enough money to charity, to some of THEM, dressed well enough, had big enough parties, bought the right jewelry, send their kids to the right schools etc etc etc etc) - only of course, that was and still remains a total LIE;
- Rest of the people feeling like complete FAILURES by birth or circumstance and spending their entire lives bemoaning the fact that THEY weren't good enough, righ enough, pretty enough, titled enough ...
Well, that was the old Victorian World.
Held by a stranglehold of a few THEMS that strangled and *directly directed* the endeavours of everyone else, whether they served THEM, fawned to THEM, leeched off of THEM, competed with THEM, tried to become one of THEM, tried to fight THEM, tried to reject THEM - all ruled by THEM, if only they knew it.
There's really only one answer to the THEM.
Which is to say, "Well piss off then, you lot. I am here and there are others like me, and we are now THEY instead. WE dictate the fashion and YOU can go to hell!"
Where attention goes, energy flows.
There is no more energy flowing than when you directly try to fight THEM - and guess what, it all serves to strengthen THEM, all the time, in every way, and no matter how much hatred, evidence, rationality or even hand grenades you throw in THEIR direction.
Ignoring THEM completely on the other hand and doing one's own thing, is a good way out of that.
I become we, and we become our own THEY.
Read that again, because it isn't only neuro-linguistic fun, but also a law of human history. Of human psychology, if you will.
The only way to a true revolution is to turn one's back on THEM altogether and not even give THEM the time of day.
But that's another story.
What I am wondering is - who are the THEYs you are worried about?
Someone said that their mother was worried about what "people would say" about their conduct.
WHO are those people she was worried about?
The neighbours?
Hmm ... chances are they don't even know that family's name, never mind give a damn about what goes on there. Nowadays, people just don't know their neighbours anymore and even if they did, so what?
Might THEY have been "the family"?
But WHO exactly is that? WHO is the THEM very specifically? A mother-sister alliance *who has already decided 25 years ago that this one will come to no good* and who can NEVER be persuaded otherwise, even if a huge parade in honour of said woman was to march through the town?
This is it, really.
A fear of the THEY is a societal/structural device to make people afraid and keep their behaviours in check FOR A LIFETIME and - it is entirely based on false ideas, lies and false equivalencies.
Further, should there be any real THEYs at all, not knowing who they are EXACTLY, what their various local rules and regulations might be, and how all of that fits in with YOUR OWN IDEAS, plans, actions, strategies is a total disabler.
So the moral of the story is, know your own THEYs. Know who they are. Be logical and rational about them, what the possible advantages are for you should you choose to join or remain with THEM, what the TRUTH is about THEM, and then play it accordingly.
You can't get to grips with THEM unless you are no longer terrified of THEM.
Treat your fear, then get to work in clarity.
And when you do, the world is mostly at your fingertips, and it isn't THEIR world any longer, but instead, it's YOURS.

THEY can't save you.
THEY can't love you.
THEY can't give you the money or respect you always searched for.
THEY cannot cure you from cancer, nor give it to you.
THEY cannot.
But ...
... the Creative Order can.
A note for NLP Students:
This is clearly an example of conversational NLP to create a belief change, starting out with a meta model enquiry into "who the hell are THEY"??? Of course, there's a whole lot more going on with this; have a go at tracking the time movements and the state movements throughout. In our opinion, NLP is designed to be spoken "fluently" - that's your aim and outcome in studying the various disconnected seeming NLP language patterns.
