NLP And EFT
An Excerpt from NLP & EFT by Dr Silvia Hartmann
The most global function and use of EFT in the NLP treatment flow is to speedily and reliably release emotional disturbances from traumatic events and causative events which manifest in reversals, blockages, stoppages to the clean flow of any NLP treatment process. EFT removes these disturbances faster and far more reliably than anything NLP currently has to offer; so whenever you are in a position to be dealing with anything at all that is rooted in and/or based on traumatic experiences or Significant Emotional Experiences, I would suggest you use EFT to release this.
Once this has been done, whatever NLP technique - whether this is submodality work, a strategy elicitation, timeline, values, metaphors, or NLP hypnosis -you wish to apply will work easier, better, faster and you will experience much less resistance from the clients, no matter what NLP technique or sequences of techniques you choose to choose.

1.Basic Uses Of EFT In The NLP Treatment Flow
Controlling Internal Representations
The most basic use of EFT for any form of NLP intervention is in helping the client overcome blockages, fears, limitations or perceived limitations regarding the things they need to do in their minds to make NLP interventions work.
There are so many examples of this, I shall have to limit myself to some of the more obvious applications.
You can treat or have clients treat themselves for:
- Inability to see/perceive/turn off/manipulate internal pictures;
- Inability to hear/understand/manipulate/switch off auditory input;
- Inability to contact kinesthetic representations;
- difficulties in making finely tuned distinctions in the K rep system;
- difficulties with bringing unconscious strategies to conscious awareness.
This, by the way, is of course also of tremendous use for any NLP practitioner’s personal development who would like to extend their own abilities to work with their own internal representations. How many NLPers sit and listen, green with envy, when they hear of the exploits of Mr Tessla or Richard Bandler, yet try as they might, they cannot just create a magnifying glass in their minds, never mind a full blown fully dimensional machine that runs in real time or time distorted time!
Using EFT to clear limiting beliefs around these kinds of areas will allow for a quantum leap in using NLP interventions for the self.
To give an example, you might like to consider a particular picture in your minds eye.
How clear on a scale from 10 to 0, ten being absolutely clear, fully dimensional, stable and real, and 0 being not there at all, is this picture right now?
Take the reading and tap for the problems relating to this exercise, ie, "Even though I can't really see anything at all, I deeply and profoundly accept myself" or, "Even though I can't keep the picture steady …" or whatever else might be the problem.
Then, ask the question again to find out how it has improved, and continue until the internal picture is satisfactory according to the criteria you are using to judge such things.
The same of course applies to the auditory system and kinesthetic representations and distinctions.
2. Releasing Blocking Issues To NLP Techniques
Many have a great fear of hypnosis which expresses itself in strong resistance to covert or overt hypnosis. EFT can take this fear away and shave many hours and much trouble off the treatment sessions.
EFT can also be used very successfully to remove general stumbling blocks to achievement with therapy, such as being able to address blocking issues such as:
- Psychological Reversals (massive, global, specific and mini)
- Issues of "deservability" - if there's enough of the client to feel they don't deserve health, wealth or happiness, interventions just won't take;
- Issues of "safety" - is it safe to release the problem/change my life etc.;
- Issues of "permission" - am I allowed to release the problem?
- Issues of "primary gain" - what will I be deprived of if I release this problem;
- Lastly, issues of "self Identitity" - my current self will die/I will lose my identity if I overcome this problem.
Some of these points are built into the "Keys to an achievable outcome" but especially with clients who have had a great deal of therapy and nothing has changed, or who seem remarkably or unusually resistant to treatments, addressing these kinds of issues before starting with the actual intervention can bring up the success rate noticeably.
3. Using EFT To Clear Limiting Beliefs In The NLP Facilitator
Not every NLPer is a therapist, but even if you are not, read this section carefully.
Limiting beliefs in the facilitator/therapist/lecturer/trainer etc have a nasty habit to manifest in real life problems in actual situations!
In study after study it has been shown that how congruent the therapist is about the uses of their particular interventions has a marked impact on how the client responds. With hypnotherapists especially, the clients can only manifest what the hypnotherapist believes they can manifest and no more.
It therefore makes sense to address therapist's limitations regarding NLP interventions in the context of making a session as successful as possible.
"Prejudices" about certain kinds of NLP interventions prejudice the outcome for those clients negatively who would have been perfect candidates for that specific kind of intervention. Using EFT to clear limiting beliefs around such subjects WILL supercharge your effectiveness with clients.
To be a little more specific, what YOU found difficult, tricky, impossible, confusing etc. when YOU were learning NLP will likewise be expirienced by YOUR clients as difficult, tricky, impossible, confusing (but not if ANOTHER was treating them who did not have YOUR reversals) – and this will continue to be the case until you treat YOUR reversals to any one given technique.
Prejudices about certain types of clients also fall into the same category; usually these are based on past negative experiences and something about the client pushes the therapist's buttons, or anchors, if you will.
Clearing away reversals and issues of self belief around one's effectiveness as a therapist, speaker or lecturer, or specific issues of belief around ones specific abilities to perform certain operations in an NLP context with clients, will also lead to great deal more enjoyment in the work and a great increase in effectiveness and success rate with clients once they have been successfully cleared.
I recommend that any NLP practitioner picks up their old training manual and looks through the pages, taking careful note of internal states and thoughts that reveal reversals to any of the techniques they learned and studied.
This will “close circuits” in your system and strongly lift your abilities across the board, as well as your self confidence.
Also, to take the time after any client has left and to spend five minutes on clearing any reversals or aspects that were revealed to you in the course of the session, things you wish had gone better, or areas you feel you could have been more effective, will absolutely transform your confidence and healing abilities across the board in a few short months.
