Mapping Across - Bug Fixing Your Mind

NLP Modeling is one thing - where you take a strategy that works in a particular context and you duplicate the strategy so that when you run it, you get the same beneficial outcomes as the original upon whom the model was based. A simple example of straight NLP modelling can be found here.

However, NLP modeling becomes much more fun and much more multi-dimensional when we extract a pattern and map it across to a completely different situation, environment or modality.

Here is an example of mapping across a strategy from bug fixing a piece of software to bug fixing your mind!

Our computer whizz Alex is testing new software at the moment and the most important part at this time is to find BUGs - places where things aren't working, or where something is going wrong.

When we find a BUG we send an email - one per BUG - that states something like,

"When you login as an admin, the theme doesn't repeat properly."

I noted with amusement yesterday that he sends such emails to himself, in order to be able to deal with each BUG one at a time and get rid of it in an orderly fashion.

The idea to send yourself a BUG report when you notice something isn't working as it should has highly amused me ever since, and I've been musing on the metaphor of that.

We are working with human systems, intrapersonal human systems, and we sure have enough BUGs in our systems to keep a team of programmers busy for a couple of weeks or so!

LOL

What if one was to send oneself emails with the BUG in the subject field and such comments as,

"Failed to phone customer and procrastinated instead."

"Upon entering the kitchen with a view to washing up, energy reversal was experienced and TV was watched instead."

"Lost temper when talking to telecom company representative about screwed up bill."

"Thought about finishing article, experienced instant onset of depression, article not finished."

"Ordered in pizza again in spite of vow to eat healthily."

Then, when one has nothing better to do on a rainy day, one might start going through the BUG reports one at a time, and applying some Events Psychology style targeted approaches to fix the problem and SQUASH THE BUG, as the saying goes.

Which, after a time, leads to really cool systems that work well and they do what they're supposed to do - a BUG REE LIFE, in other words.

LOL wouldn't that be something!

SFX :-)
