How To Be A Better NLP Hypnotist: The Top Ten Tips

People are always asking me what they can do to be a better NLP style hypnotist, which includes how to do better self hypnosis as well as conversational hypnosis, and what is known as covert hypnosis. Here are my top ten tips how to be a better NLP hypnotist.

1. Hypnosis doesn't just happen in the mind, it happens in the body too ...

... and in the energy system as well so we are talking about a totality state.

For an NLPer practising their hypnosis skills, that means "Get out of your head!" and start paying attention to the full body experience of hypnosis instead.

This includes very importantly, emotions, sensations, intuitions and FEELINGS IN THE BODY.

2. Practice Self Hypnosis

Following on directly from No. 1, to be a really good hypnotist you need to KNOW TRANCE FROM THE INSIDE. You need to know what it feels like, and how you slide through various states into unconsciousness at the far end.

Dig out your NLP hypnosis CDs and pay attention to everything BEYOND THE WORDS - they are the last thing you should be worrying about - and most of all, attention to your own body and states of being.

3. Address your own reversals on the topic of NLP hypnosis

If you were to sit down and think about it, do you have misgivings about NLP hypnosis? About covert hypnosis, and having power over other people, or alternatively, giving another hypnotist power over you?

Are there any aspects of you (parts in NLP lingo) that are scared of hypnosis, have been brain washed, mis-taught or entrained to be afraid of hypnosis remaining?

Do you think you have all the basic abilities and resources to be a GREAT NLP style hypnotist?

All and any reversals will affect your ability to do NLP hypnosis really well, so take them out as soon as you become aware of them.

This gives you a chance to practice your favourite NLP belief change patterns, or alternatively, just use EFT, it's quicker.

4. Pay attention to trance

Identify how you know when you are sliding into trance (see No. 2) and from there on, pay attention to "trance slides" as they occur in your reality - your trance slides, people you talk to, people who are interacting and you are watching them, people on the TV.

5. Extend your definition of trance and hypnosis

Trance states are not just about lying down and going to sleep; in fact, some of the most profound trance states are high energy states, like you can observe with a "Hallelujah!" style religious ceremony where people get higher and higher - and get implanted with all sorts in the process.

Get away from the "55 minute therapy hour" model of hypnosis and consider that it can and should be instant, or as long or as short as the hypnotist defines it to be.

Notice trance occurring after a shock - a good shock, or a bad shock, it doesn't matter which.

Notice trance occurring through boredom and repetition.

Notice trance occurring through rhythm.

Notice trance occurring through movement.

Notice trance occurring through touch.

There are many different types of trances and to spot them is the first step to making them happen yourself when the opportunity presents itself.

6. Practice "Gestalt" inductions

Most often, NLP hypnosis relies on words being spoken.

"Baby if I say the right words, at the right time, you'll be mine ..."

Words are just the symptoms of state overall; but to learn to flow words smoothly has a lot to do with physical practice.

I used to record hypnosis inductions just of the top of my head for practice when I was but a young NLPling; but you can also put down a cushion, pretend it's your subject, and start hypnotizing the cushion for practice.

The cushion can of course have a variety of problems it might need help with, or be in many different states when you start out; as long as no-one's around to see and hear you do that, it is an excellent first practice to get your state control and your flow of words, ideas, and state slides going.

7. Write and deliver NLP hypnosis scripts to yourself

Consult with yourself as to what you might need help with, then create an NLP hypnosis induction to play back to yourself. Recording has never been easier; should you find reversals to your voice, that obviously needs treating so it isn't an issue any longer.

Allowing yourself to hypnotize yourself and noticing the places where mistakes occur, where you get unpleasant "zzzts" in the hypnotic experience, what works and what doesn't work is one of the best forms of practice possible.

8. Start thinking like a real NLP Hypnotist!

Take the opportunity of communications with real people to practice SMALL ASPECTS of the hypnosis processes.

At a checkout, change your state and notice how this affects the customer service staff.

At a bank counter, try some hand gestures and note the unconscious response from the teller.

Even in a telephone conversation with a marketing person you can play around with talking lower, talking slower, leaving long gaps in strange places, practicing language patterns and all sorts - PLAY with the ideas, the skills, the techniques and MAKE THEM A PART OF YOUR LIFE.

I do think that most student NLPers have this unfortunate tendency to leave their NLP education up to workshops or "sacred circles" of special times at home, and all the rest of the day and night, just behave as they always did.

That's a huge shame and a loss of much practice time and opportunity, indeed, and it slows the processes of getting to be a better hypnotist down to a snail's crawl when there is no need for that at all!

9. Set outcomes beyond hypnosis itself.

The processes of hypnosis in general, of trance, and NLP hypnosis in particular are FASCINATING.

Indeed they are so fascinating, that many a good NLPer gets lost in the many fascinating facets of the ins and outs of trance.

But to become a good NLP hypnotist, you need to have an outcome frame in mind, something to steer all these phenomenas towards, a goal, if you will.

If you are scared that the "failure to attain a goal" will undermine your confidence in hypnosis, take some action to alleviate that fear and enter into a much more proactive, experimental state of mind.

Set an outcome, such as, "I want the check out operator to start scratching her head."

Design a pattern that you think will accomplish that.

Run it, test it.

Simply take feedback and refine it until you understand the cause-and-effect-connections between what you do and the way you are, and how other people respond to that hypnotically.

And this takes us to the last and most important point of all:

10. Fall in love with hypnosis!

Be sure you know that you have EVERYTHING you need to be an EXCELLENT NLP Hypnotist!

Any doubts, at any time; any fear or guilt; any forms of reversals, blocks, negative emotions, procrastination, feelings of "I can't do this ...", "I don't understand this ..." and all the rest of it, TAKE THEM OUT.

Affirm "I am a GREAT Hypnotist!" in thought, mind, emotion and action.

Have hypnosis be a FRIEND to you, a really useful something that can bring you a plethora of joy, fun, excitement, power, interest, learning, EVOLUTION and more that you didn't expect to be receiving from it.

Allow yourself to really fall in love with hypnosis!

The more you love any thing, the more attention you will pay to it, the more information flows between you, and it, the more you learn, and the more motivated you become.

Take out fears, blockages and reversals or anything that stands between you and hypnosis itself and really let yourself LOVE it in all its many potentials, all its many possibilities.

A real, pure love of hypnosis itself, beyond all the goodies is the very best attitude to bring out the best in you - and will give you the best results with NLP hypnosis in the end, no matter what you want to use it for.

These are my top ten tips for becoming an OUTSTANDING NLP hypnotist.

Enjoy your hypnosis, stay light and have fun,
