I was watching a really remarkably well made program about the origins of the Internet, and there was a very young Bill Gates, giving an interview, at the dawn of Windows march to world domination, and here is what Bill Gates said.
"It's only software.
"EVERYTHING is possible!"
And I thought, wow! NLP in a nutshell.
Couldn't have said it better myself.
It's only software, and therefore, everything is possible, because we get to write the software OURSELVES.
It's not god given, it doesn't spring from a cleft rock of ages, WE WRITE THE SOFTWARE FOR OUR NEUROLOGY.
And that makes EVERYTHING possible.
It makes changing your mind possible.
When you change your mind, your world changes; and when that happens, THE world changes in response to your behavioural changes at the same time.
A lot of people get lost and confused in the many different trails of techniques of NLP - Neuro Linguistic Programming, say it slowly and hypnotically, let it roll off your tongue and understand what it means as you do so!
But the core of it is to start working with the software of your neurology, and my neurology too, and just as Bill Gates said, to really understand that it is ONLY software, and thereby, everything becomes possible.
We - and I include the entire NLP community in this as well as the unknowing billions - have not begun to scratch the surface of what you can do with that Bill Gates statement, and the fact that we can run different forms of language as the software for our neurology.
I had a client once who I encouraged to re-define ONE SINGLE WORD in a different way, and that ONE SINGLE WORD being re-defined instantly collapsed 14 years of incredible psychosomatic illnesses - right there and then.
The way that word was working in their software for the brain was like a virus - destroying them from the inside out, even though the hardware was perfect in all ways.
When Bill Gates said, "It's only software - everything's possible!" that doesn't just mean that NICE things are possible.
It also means that it is possible for literally millions upon millions of people to do THE most INSANE things to each other and never stop to think, "Well that didn't work, we better do/think/say something else instead!"
God created the hardware, but we created the software, and my, what a mess that is ...
I've said for years that we need a new language, a totally different language based on the way the human neurology WANTS to work, a more information rich, less linear language that actually engages the existing hardware properly and makes good use of it.
I don't know if I'll get round to this in my lifetime, but what I want you to take away from this article, and me too, and make us remember this, is that it really is only software, whatever we're thinking, whatever reasoning we come up with, whatever words laid end on end frighten us to death (sometimes quite literally) and what concepts we can't get a handle on - it's probably the software's fault, and to look there first of all.
And also, I want me and all of us who are interested in this whole human evolution thing and NLP to really remember now that NLP means Neuro Linguistic Programming - language software for the hardware of the neurology.
That's its core, that's NLP's heart, and that's so important, it can hardly be over-estimated at all as we humans tie ourselves into totally unnecessary knots intrapersonally as well as interpersonally because we're simply not the masters of our own software, nor appreciate that we ARE THE SOFTWARE ENGINEERS, each one of us!
 So the next time you think, "Ooh that's too scary ..." or "Nobody loves me ..." or "I'm way too (young/old/rich/poor/dumb etc) to ever ..." or any other nonsense that we all think all the time, those veritable virus infestated software pieces running in and ruining our beautiful minds ...
... remember our friend Bill Gates, who went on to become the richest man on Earth from nothing at all, simply by understanding that ...
